David William Smith, 90, of York, passed away peacefully on September 5th, 2025 in Dallastown. He was born November 21st, 1934 in Springfield Township to the late Grover and Ethel (Miller) Smith. He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys M. Smith on January 15th, 2025 with whom he graduated from Susquehannock High School in 1953 and married on August 27, 1955 (yes that is 69 years!).
David is also survived by his sons, David Smith, Jr. and wife Kathleen, and Dennis Sweitzer (né Smith) and wife Sharon Sweitzer, grandchildren Derek Smith and wife Stacey, Kyle Smith and wife Meghan, Jared Smith and wife Jessica, Liedeke Sweitzer, Natasha Sweitzer, Jolene Sweitzer, Kendra Sweitzer and step-grandson Cory Grove and wife Heather, nine great-grandchildren, Lyric Williams, Vincent Williams, Avery Smith, Kyra Smith, Owen Smith, Sam Smith, Joshua Smith, Alannah Smith, Killian Smith, siblings Glen, Margaret, Dorothy and Mary, many nieces and nephews plus various honorary offspring and grand-offsprings from over the years.
David and Gladys were charter members of the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society of Pennsylvania helping to document and preserve wooden bridges and old grist mills in several states. They both enjoyed travel and camping.They were longtime members of Shrewsbury Assembly of God involved in the Royal Rangers program and 'behind the scenes' helping with the kitchen and events. David worked 38 years at Caterpillar Tractor, York as a production and set up machinist and 10 years as a millwright.
From his time growing up on a farm and involvement in FFA during high school, he continued farming, construction and machinery repair for his entire life. He created many one-off pieces of equipment using his millwright skills. During his time with CAT he often took a set of drawings, then created what would work on the production line. In retirement he repaired and maintained many lawn mowers and riding tractors. He was a life member of Steam-O-Rama in Windsor. His most prized possession was his John Deere Model 40 tractor that he bought new in 1955, used on the farm and he restored.
A viewing will be held at Geiple-Predicce Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 53 Main St., Glen Rock, PA 17327 on Thursday, September 25th, 2025 from 6 PM to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held Friday, September 26th, 2025, 1 PM at the funeral home. Burial immediately following at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Shrewsbury Assembly of God Royal Rangers, 234 N. Main St., Shrewsbury, PA 17361
