Eugene R. Smith, Sr.
New Freedom

Eugene R. Smith Sr, 83, of New Freedom, died Thursday January 13, 2011 at York Hospital.  He was the husband of Betty L. (Hockman) Smith, with whom he celebrated a 61st wedding anniversary on June 4, 2010.
        Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday January 17, 2011 at the Geiple Funeral Home, Inc. 53 Main Street, Glen Rock, with Pastor Michelle L. Whitlock, of Trinity United Methodist Church, New Freedom, officiating. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.  Viewings will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday and from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Monday at the funeral home.
       Mr. Smith was born on September 18, 1927 in York, a son of the late Harry W. and Ada M. (Geisler) Smith.
       He retired in 1992 as CNC Welder with Ward Machinery in Cockeysville, MD, following 25 years of service. He also had been employed as a School Bus Driver for the former Caskey Bus Company in Railroad.  
       A lifelong resident of New Freedom, he graduated in 1946 from New Freedom High School.  Eugene had played second base for the American Insulator Team in the Southern York County Baseball League for many years and was also active in Boy Scouting, serving as a Scout Master in both Cub Scout Pack #24 and Boy Scout Troop #24 in New Freedom.  He at one time played Santa Claus for the town and was also an avid fan of Penn State Football and NASCAR.
       Besides his wife, he also leaves two daughters, Melissa J. “Missy” Keefer and her husband, Richard of Gettysburg, Amy E. Burkholder and her husband Warren of Dover; two sons, Eugene R. Smith Jr. and his wife Jane of Richmond, VA and Ralph R. “Bud” Smith and his wife Mabel of Jacobus; 11 grandchildren, Brady, Ben, Kristy, Jessica, Timmy, Mike, Lindsey, Andy, Blake, Nathan and Elizabeth; 10 great grandchildren, Kanyn, Haley, Hannah, Catherine, Andrew, Hunter, Amelia, Taytum and Tiana, and  Adison who will be born soon.  He also leaves a sister, Betty J. Ryer of New Freedom, a daughter in law, Bev A. Stiffler-Smith of Wrightsville and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a son, Paul D. “Dan” Smith.
